The Beacon M.O.D.E.L. for Sustanable Neighborhood Revitalization and Community Empowerment.

BeaconModel

Our M.O.D.E.L. (Mapping. Outreach. Development. Engagement.

Leadership.) is implemented in each Beacon location’s neighborhood. This Model provides the foundation and guidelines for revitalizing struggling neighborhoods. We have seen visible improvements and positive, documented outcomes in the neighborhoods we serve. Residents serve on the following Teams: Blight, Block Captains, Crime, Green Space, Infrastructure, NORA, Outreach, Quality of Life, and Survey. They can also serve as Beacon Administrators, Block Captain Lieutenants, Data Managers, Volunteer Coordinators, and Volunteer Supervisors.

MAPPING

Resident teams survey property and infrastructure conditions in their neighborhoods. This survey data collected by these Teams is entered into our master database and Geographic Information System (GIS).
Lakeview

These mapping results provide a simple way for residents to identify blight, Louisiana Land Trust properties, and occupancy rates. Residents can also encourage developers and business owners to open new locations in heavily populated areas and make an investment back into their community, as well as assist in forecasting economic viability. City and state agencies have also used these results to establish priority areas of infrastructure repair and blight mitigation.

Beacon Teams rely on mapping results to identify needs in their neighborhoods. By extracting data, such as infrastructure problems or blighted properties, Teams are well-informed to advocate to local governmental agencies, such as Code Enforcement and Public Works, to rectify these issues.

OUTREACH Outreach

We created the Neighborhood Impact Workshop series to reach out to residents and explain our MODEL.  This series takes place at community, neighborhood, and individual levels. At these Workshops, experienced Beacon leaders and city officials guide residents through each step of the recovery process and lead specialized sessions, working to unify and empower residents.

DEVELOPMENT Garden

Beacon of Hope Resource Center has established community development programs that generate development throughout the community. As we expand our Beacons, we implement these proven programs to expedite residential and economic development.

Residential Development

  • No Place Like Home Tours
  • Community Gardens
  • Welcome Home Program
  • Barn Raising Program

Economic Development

    • Harrison Avenue Marketplace
    • Mentored coordinators to establish Marketplace models in Gentilly and New Orleans East.

EMPOWERMENT

Empowerment

As part of the Model, Beacon of Hope Resource Center trains and empowers residents to become advocates for their neighborhoods. By mobilizing residents to facilitate their own recovery, they feel a sense of pride and ownership in their neighborhood.

LEADERSHIP

FunBeacon of Hope Resource Center works with neighborhood associations to build stronger leadership and implement the MODEL. Residents, who may not have been previously active within the community, become influential voices as they work with non-profit organizations and governmental agencies to address neighborhood and city-wide issues.
